Highlights:

  • Renesas joins the Autoware Foundation to accelerate development of pre–integrated ADAS and autonomous driving systems for automotive OEMs.
  • The collaboration aims to deliver entry–level L2 ADAS systems which can scale up to L2++ hands-free autopilot and fully driverless L4 Robotaxis.
  • Introduces Autoware’s open-source end-to-end AI stack as a new AI driving software option for customers using Renesas R-Car SoC and RoX software platforms.
  • Enables OEMs and Tier-1s to retrain, tune and customize the open-source AI stack for specific vehicles and use-cases with deployment on Renesas R-Car SoCs.

TOKYO, Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Autoware today announced that Renesas Electronics has joined the Autoware Foundation as a member of its highest membership tier. This collaboration brings Autoware‘s open-source end-to-end AI software to the Renesas R-Car SoC platforms, as pre-integrated and scalable solutions to enable production-ready, cost effective, and customizable automotive products that can scale from entry level driver assistance to hands-free autopilot and fully autonomous driving.

"We believe that this is the Linux moment for the ADAS and autonomous driving industry", said Christian John, Board Director at the Autoware Foundation. "By bringing Autoware’s open-source technology stack to Renesas’ R-Car SoC platform, we are able to deploy customizable, scalable, and production-grade technologies to automotive OEMs and Tier-1s around the world at a fraction of the cost of traditional suppliers. We see this as a watershed moment in the automotive and autonomous driving industry and are excited to spearhead the advancement of open-source AI".

"The automotive industry is moving beyond individual components toward integrated platforms that combine computing, AI and open software technologies," said Aish Dubey, VP and Head of HPC SoC Division, Renesas Electronics Corporation. "With our collaboration with the Autoware Foundation, we are providing OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers with scalable solutions that help reduce integration complexity and expand their options for deploying AI-driven ADAS and automated driving systems."

By deploying Autoware’s open-source end-to-end AI technologies on Renesas R-Car platform, automotive OEMs and Tier-1s can choose to build upon an open-source technology substrate instead of building the entire AI stack in-house or buying a ready-made solution from traditional commercial suppliers. This gives them a low-cost and flexible solution which can be internalized and customized. Autoware’s software is supplied as Apache 2.0 licensed, enabling full commercialization without restrictions.
